Hello there, Mamas! I've been looking through the old posts to answer my original question- I think I have detergent build up. Looking through the old posts kind of confused me more, and I'm running out of time before DS gets up from his nap and computer time is zapped, so I'm posting my ??s. Sorry if this is redundant....

His diapers have started leaking pee out the sides. When I change him, the diaper doesn't seem like it was wet enough to leak. We've been CDing for 18 months now with no problems. I use unbleached, organic cotton prefolds with thirsties covers.

I started looking up info to strip the residue and saw Dawn and vinegar mentioned. does the type of Dawn matter? I have ultra concentrated Dawn antibacterial dish soap....is that okay? Or should I get plain Dawn? Is vinegar the best option? How do you do that? I know there is a balance for the PH using baking soda....Confused

Also- I think I have hard water. I know I have iron & minerals in my water (my tiolet gets an orange film on it every few days that easily scrubbs off.) What is Calgon, and where do you get it? Is it nessisary? I don't even know why this started happening....nothing has changed!

I put the dipes in for a cold soak, soak over night, add the detergent and wash. Next I run a hot cycle (my water averages 140 degrees-180 degrees hot).  I use Ecos detergent- 1/4 the recomended amount.  Are my dipes wearing out?

ARGH I dunno, but I thank you for taking the time to read this legnthy post and thanks in advance for the help. Embarrassed

Also, people keep mentioning an ammonia smell- when I change DS, there is no smell, but I have noticed his diaper pail has a strong ammonia odor when I dump it in the washer- is this part of the problem? I thought it was just b/c the dipes sit for a few days before being washed.

The ammonia in the pail isn't a problem.

For stripping i'd recommend either blue Dawn or Ivory dish detergents.  Use 1 tbsp in a TLer or 1 tsp in a FLer in a hot wash.  If you have hard water i'd really recommend adding in a cap of Calgon.  Then rinse like crazy until no suds are left and no film floats to the top of the water.

Ecos detergent is known to cause some issues over time in hard water because it contains soap.  You can either strip periodically as needed or try a detergent without soap.  Lots of mamas need to strip occasionally so don't sweat it yet.

If for some reason the Dawn and Calgon doesn't fix the problem let us know and we'll try something more.  But this is the quickest fix right now.
