So I am completely new to cloth diapering, and would love to hear from all of you what my stash should look like. We have kind of a unique situation here--
We have a 14 month old dd and a 5 month old foster son. I'd like to start cloth diapering both babies, using mainly pre-folds and covers, but I am not opposed to using the AIO diapers-- I was just trying to be a bit more frugal with the pre-folds and covers, and it seems that they work well for many. Dd is 22 lbs, and my foster son is just under 15 pounds (and very skinny little legs). They wear size 3 and size 2 disposable diapers currently. My foster son could wear a size 3 disposable (what I put on him at night). There seems to be some brands of covers that they can BOTH wear, even given their size/age difference. How many and what would you get to completely outfit them both in cd? I've ordered an initial "trial stash" (mostly to prove to myself that I will actually spend the extra laundry time to cd), but I will quickly be looking to complete my stash... TIA! |

I would stick with PF's and covers. They are simple and easy. They also wash up easy in the wash and have a lot less smell issues! I never tried AIO's because of the price and I found that PF's were really easy, even for DH. I had 2 in diapers FT for about 1.5 years and had approximately 3 dozen diapers for FT cloth diapering.
I would say a "starting stash" would be something like this... (it is just one idea)
3 dozen premium PF's (depending on the size of the 5 months old, they should fit both of them. If they are too big than 2 dozen Premium and 2 dozen Infant size PF's)
4 covers in each size - probably medium for the 5 months old and large for the 14 month old. Thirsties, Bummis, Bumpkins, Mother Ease Air Flow (to name a few of the favorites out there)
6 Snappi - regular size (if you use a wrap cover you could also just lay in the cover with out pinning or using a snappi but a snappi is a nice alternative and really helps hold everything in)
3 dozen - cloth wipes (I never thought I would use cloth wipes, but I love them now!)
2 Wet Bags or Pail Liners - I have basic Bummis ones and they work great and are inexpensive. I just put them in a trash can for a dry pail
Diaper Salve/Cream - Northern Essence makes great diaper salve that is cloth diaper safe and smells really nice too.
I tried Pocket Diapers in the beginning but found them to not be practicle for CDing 2. They are expensive and more prone to leaks and smell issues. I tried out PF's something I didn't think I would ever do and loved them. They work great and are not difficult, especially with a snappi clip. I tried Flats in February and never picked up a PF again. Flats are trimmer and just as absorbant. They do take a little more time beause you fold the diaper, where as PF's come pre-folded. They are a one size diaper and very adjustable so that is why I like them a lot. So I would go with Premium Prefolds or Flats. Little Lions is my favorite place for PF's and Flats because of the prices and quality (their seconds are great prices and I could never tell the difference). They also have snappi's and covers. Also have trial packages so that is another option. Good luck! It can be overwhelming at first but ask all the questions you can and you will find what works for you. Hi, and welcome to the world of cloth diapering!
Covers and prefolds does sound like the best way for you to go. They're not the main thing I use, so I'm not sure how much help I can be on the how many questions, but I'll tell you what I like/know and hope that helps. First I can second everything Sarah says! But I'll also add that you may want to get a few One-Size pockets or AIOs, that you could use on both kids for outings or other times when convenience is key. I also would think that One-Size covers might be a good idea. I really like both wonderwraps (great for skinny kids) and Blueberry overalls. I've never used any of the sized covers Sarah mentioned above, but I've heard good things about all of them. |

I'm on my second round of CDing two kids and I agree with both pp's. Prefolds is the way to go for most of your stash and I'd suggest Bum Genius Organic Cotton AIOs for your easy diapers. The BG OC AIOs have fit all my kids well and all the BG diapers have been leak-proof for us.

I only have GMD pfs so I don't know how other brands compare size wise, but you could easily do red edge for both kids I would think. Especially if you just trifold it in the cover. Personally I'd get 2 dozen reds and 2 dozen browns at least and probably at least 6 covers. I love the Thirsties Duo (you should be able to get away with size 2 for both kids) and the BB OS Coveralls. Either of them can be adjusted to fit a wide range of sizes. I love the MEAF covers for night time.
As for the AIOs, I guess it depends on how much you think you'll need them. If you are looking to go inexpensive, I've heard great things about the Sposoeasy. AIOs take a long time to dry typically. That's the down side. The BG OC AIOs did not work for us. I had leaking issues with them. I know lots of mamas love them though. I personally LOVE LOVE LOVE my Fishnoodles AI2s. They are sized though. They dry really quickly, are super trim and very absorbant. Really can't say enough positive things about them. In fact, if I keep talking about them, I might go order some more for myself.
You might also consider pockets as your convenience dipes. They are quicker to dry, but you do have to stuff them. If you stuff them as you wash them, they are as easy to use as a sposie or an AIO. You can stuff them with a PF too. I have medium FBs and they would probably work for both of your kiddos. FB also has a OS or you could go with BG. I'd just recommend that you try a few before you invest in a bunch of one kind. Good luck!! Welcome to the CDing world and to the Pin!! |

Prefolds are great but I love flats more. They are one size, quick and easy to wash and dry, multi-functional, and more. The only trick is folding them, but once you find a couple folds you like, then it is easy. A OS cover might be nice, but I like my Mother Ease Air Flow covers best.
I would say you need 36 PFs or flats should do you fine plus 5-6 covers for each child. a few snappis and/or pins 24-36 wipes or wash cloths Other things you might like to have later Wet bags a few pockets wool covers for night time |

I LOVE my diaper sprayer. I couldn't have kept CDing with out it. Other than that, I started with prefolds and liked them just fine. The trick is getting good fitting covers.

I wouldn't still be CDing without my sprayer, either! Especially with prefolds.
