So....my fabulously unique DD is going to be.... prepare yourself, a SEA OTTER, for Halloween
SHe has loved the darn things since she was about 9 months old and now has a huge family of stuffed, plastic, etc, otters that live here with us. We were fortunate to see the "Otters From Around the World" exhibit twice at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. And on this most recent trip we decided she would just have to be a Sea Otter fro Halloween. I always want her costume to reflect her in some way:) So, I hope I am posting in the right place...I thought I would post my progress for accountability and encouragement! I usually have costumes done in August! Yipes! I am using a bear costume and modifying it...adding the tail, different ears... Help keep me going! I have to finish in 2 weeks before our holiday! So today....
I race home while Kamden is in preschool to sew a bit...get the biggest section pinned, then sew a reinforced seam, in this soft plushy fake fur....then realize I'D JUST SEWN UP THE WRONG SEAM!!!! Amazingly I was able to laugh it off...as I sat hear beginning to rip it out (impossible) I realized I have so much left over fabric I am just cutting out new body pieces! HAH! Now I have new pieces cut and my goal is to get the front done and the zipper in tonight...uhrg, zippers! thank you Meghan:) |

Today I hope to get the back sewn up, stuff & attach tail & finish the necks....although...the pattern wants me to turn the necklines separately & I am adding a hood so I will have to work out my plan first...hmm...brain power needed

okay....I toiled over the size....even the sz 4 measured huge so I figured, fine, I'll make the 6, it's only 1/2 inch wider, 1" longer....I'll have deep hems so that I can let it out later and she can wear it longer...doh!
how am I going to get this to fit?!

haha I just finished my son's zebra costume. I used a pattern that included one for a dog and tiger and just modified the ears on the hood to be a little longer and pointier and made a mane to add on. I had to finish it this month because we will be gone without a sewing machine next month.
At first he wanted to be a horse which would have been cheaper because no special fabric, but then he changed his mind. Now he has to stick with it, he has no choice. With my extra fabric I made a bag for him to carry his candy in. My husband said it is kind of sick, because it is a zebra carrying a bag made out of one of his friends  . |

Poor Otter sits here again tonight, *sigh* Kamden was so tired tonight I had no time to mark/measure before she went to sleep....but Thursday she was thrilled to be swallowed up in the huge, un-hemmed otter!

I will use the camel colored fluff for the hood & ears ad I am going to attach the starfish to the belly just like an Otter would hold and eat:) STill thinking, should I just whips stitch it on and remove easily later? Or use a velcro tab do DD can take it on and off? The only down is that then the stupid velcro tab would be left there... |

The neck is still bigger than I'd like, even though I adjusted it.....I might still take it in a little before I add the hood. The crotch does hang pretty low, but I think it's just going to need to be okay. There are about 4" of cuff under the sleeve & ankle hems. So in a few years I can let it all out and she can still wear it. Maybe when she's 10 she'll be an otter again for Halloween
